Project Overview

A coastal-modern interior commission for a 220 m² Puerto Banús penthouse with a wraparound sea-view terrace. The owners — a London-based couple buying their first Costa del Sol residence — wanted a calm, editorial home that breathed the sea without resorting to nautical clichés. We built the scheme around off-white limewash, whitewashed pale oak floors, ivory bouclé and a single thread of deep navy linen, anchored by brushed antique brass and a single Calacatta accent slab in the kitchen. Full FF&E pack delivered: floor plans, lighting plan, joinery drawings, a 47-piece furniture spec, and on-site styling down to the dried palm fronds in the matte-cream ceramic.

Client Brief & Concept

Finished living-dining room with the wraparound terrace beyond — the after picture

The owners — a couple in their fifties, finance-and-architecture, splitting time between London and Marbella — bought the penthouse already shell-renovated and asked Magnum Reformas for interior design only: no construction, just the full FF&E and styling pack. Their brief: a home that feels like a calm Mediterranean retreat after a noisy Puerto Banús summer, never a marina catalogue. They specifically asked us to avoid stripes, ropes, anchors and any nautical motif. Instead: layered whites, a single deep-navy thread, warm brass, whitewashed oak underfoot, the sea visible but not announced.

Before & During

Before — original 1990s Marina interior
During — renovated shell, before furnishing

Two states tell the design story. Before: a 1990s Marina-era interior with peach walls, dark wenge floor, mirrored cabinetry and a chrome-and-glass bar — exactly the kind of dated luxury the owners wanted to erase. During: the same room six months later, after the previous contractor delivered the empty renovated shell — whitewashed oak floor, off-white limewash plaster, ready terrace doors — but completely undressed, the architectural canvas before any soft-goods or lighting were placed. The before-after slider on this page anchors on this exact view so visitors see what interior design adds on top of construction.

Wall Treatment & Architecture

Whitewashed oak slat accent wall — vertical rhythm catching coastal light

Walls were treated as the primary atmospheric surface of the apartment — not a backdrop, but a quiet protagonist. We specified off-white limewash plaster, hand-trowelled in three coats, slightly cooler than warm cream, with a deliberately mottled finish so the surface catches the changing coastal light all day. A single whitewashed oak slat accent wall runs floor-to-ceiling behind the bed in the master suite — vertical 40 mm staves with 8 mm shadow gaps, ceruse-style limed finish — repeating the floor language vertically and giving the room a quiet directional rhythm.

Custom Wardrobes & Joinery

Master built-in wardrobe — whitewashed oak with smoked-bronze handle channels

The master suite carries a bespoke 4-bay built-in wardrobe in whitewashed European oak, floor-to-ceiling, with smoked-bronze inlaid handle channels running the full height of each door so the wardrobe reads as a continuous architectural plane rather than a piece of furniture. Inside: hanging space, push-to-open drawer banks for folded knitwear, a glass-fronted shelving column for accessories, and integrated warm-white LED in the shadow gap above each door. Built in Magnum's Mijas joinery workshop, installed without a single visible screw on the front face.

Master Suite — Dressed Bed

Master bed — layered linen, cashmere and a single thread of navy

The master bed sits centred against the slat wall, dressed in layered washed linen in chalk and oat, two cream-linen pillows, two larger ivory-cashmere shams, a soft-grey cashmere throw folded across the foot, and three navy-linen scatter cushions in graduated tones. Bedside tables in whitewashed oak with travertine-cream tops carry an alabaster-and-brass table lamp, a single hand-thrown ceramic carafe with a glass on top, and a hand-bound book turned face up. The bed itself is a low-profile platform in whitewashed oak with a soft bouclé headboard.

Dining Setting

Dining table dressed for six with cream linen and olive branches

The dining table is a whitewashed European oak refectory in 2.4 m, set for six even when no one is eating: cream-linen runner, hand-thrown stoneware plates with a soft oat glaze, brushed-brass cutlery, hand-blown drinking glasses with a faint smoke tint, and a flat travertine centerpiece holding fresh olive branches. Above the table, an alabaster-and-brass linear pendant runs the table's length on a dimmer scene set to glow at 30% by default. Cane-back rush-seat dining chairs add a single light Mediterranean note without tipping into kitsch.

Lighting, Decor & Texture

Alabaster-and-brass table lamp — material join close-up
Console still-life — travertine tray, ceramics and books
Texture macro — bouclé, linen and cashmere on whitewashed oak

Lighting is layered on three planes throughout the penthouse: ceiling downlights on dimmer scenes for general illumination (used at 30% most of the time), alabaster-and-brass table lamps at every seating position, and brass picture lights above each canvas. Decor follows the same restraint: the console-top still life is one travertine tray, two hand-thrown ceramic vessels in cream and oat, three cloth-bound books, one small ceramic with a single cobalt brushwork detail. The texture story across the apartment — bouclé on linen on cashmere on jute, oak on travertine, brass on plaster — gives the second-look reveal the brief asked for.
