Project Overview

A full transformation of an 18 m² kitchen in a Marbella Golden Mile penthouse. The original kitchen was a closed galley with dated beige laminate cabinets, visible chrome handles and dark floor tiles. We removed the dividing wall, created a Calacatta Gold marble island with a dramatic waterfall edge, fitted floor-to-ceiling white lacquered handleless cabinetry, and integrated every Siemens appliance invisibly behind matching panels. The result: a seamless white plane that opens to a Mediterranean sea view through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Client Brief & Initial Assessment

Completed white kitchen — Calacatta Gold island and sea view

The client — an international property owner who uses the penthouse as a holiday and rental property — came to us with a clear brief: the kitchen had to look magazine-quality, function efficiently for a professional chef when renting the property, and require minimal maintenance. The original galley measured only 14 m² and felt cramped and dark. A structural survey confirmed that the wall separating the kitchen from the dining terrace could be safely removed, expanding the usable area to 18 m² and creating a direct visual connection to the sea view. The client approved a full gut-out: every surface, every fitting, every tile was to be replaced.

Material Selection at the Showroom

Calacatta Gold marble slab — showroom selection

The client visited our Marbella showroom for a two-hour selection session with our interior design team. The starting point was the cabinetry colour: the client was initially drawn to a warm off-white but after seeing large-format door samples in natural light, chose pure white lacquer (RAL 9016) for its cleaner contrast with the marble and the sea. For the island worktop, three stone slabs were shortlisted in the showroom: Statuario Bianco, Calacatta Michelangelo and Calacatta Gold by Porcelanosa — ultimately chosen for its warm gold veining which picks up the brass detail in the pendant lights. The Bianco Puro 120×60 cm floor tile from Casalgrande Padana was selected over four alternatives because of its near-matte finish that conceals footprints and coastal sand. Every Siemens appliance was reviewed on a working display kitchen in the showroom before specification.

Demolition & Preparation

Demolition took 3 days. The non-structural wall was removed using a combination of angle grinder and chisel to minimise vibration and dust spread to the rest of the apartment. An RSJ steel lintel (152×152×23 UB) was installed across the full opening width of 2.4 m, bearing on padstones built into the existing masonry piers. All existing tiles — floor and wall — were stripped back to the concrete slab and block substrate. The concrete floor was then diamond-ground flat to a ±1.5 mm tolerance across the full 18 m², a critical step to ensure the large-format floor tiles lay without lippage. All walls were dot-and-dab boarded with 12.5 mm moisture-resistant plasterboard. New electrical first-fix was routed: dedicated 32A circuit for oven, 20A for induction hob, 16A for dishwasher, separate RCD-protected ring for lighting.

Cabinetry, Worktop & Appliance Installation

Siemens iQ700 appliance tower — oven and microwave in white lacquered surround

The bespoke cabinetry was manufactured in our workshop and delivered in flat-pack carcasses. Installation followed a precise sequence: base units first, levelled using adjustable feet to achieve a continuous flat run; then the Calacatta Gold island worktop was templated in the space (a flexible digital template was taken after all cabinets were set) and fabricated off-site, returned in one single 2.4 m slab with the waterfall panel cut from the same block to match the veining. The slab was craned through the penthouse terrace as it could not navigate the stairwell. All Siemens iQ700 appliances — pyrolytic oven, combination microwave, fully integrated dishwasher, fully integrated fridge-freezer column — were installed and tested before the matching panel doors were hung. The flush-mount induction hob (Siemens EX877LX67E, 80 cm FlexInduction) was cut directly into the island marble with a 5 mm polished mitred edge around the perimeter. The concealed extractor (Siemens LB97574M1) is housed inside the upper cabinet, recirculating at 750 m³/h.

Finishing, Lighting & Final Details

Handleless cabinet door edge — push-to-open lacquer detail
Evening mood — under-cabinet LED and brass pendants

The 120×60 cm Bianco Puro floor tiles were laid in a continuous running bond with 1.5 mm laser-guided joints and grouted in ivory epoxy (Mapei Kerapoxy CQ) for zero-maintenance hygiene. Walls above the worktop and behind the hob received a full-height back-painted glass splashback in white, bonded directly to the plasterboard for a seamless flush surface. The lighting design uses three independent circuits: a dimmable recessed GU10 grid (18 × Philips CorePro GU10, 3000 K) for general task lighting; warm LED under-cabinet strips (Philips Hue Gradient Lightstrip, 2700 K) that create an ambient glow on the marble worktop; and the three brass Flos IC Lights pendants above the island for atmospheric dining light. A final snagging visit 10 days after completion addressed four minor items — one door alignment, two grout touch-ups, and a drawer soft-close adjustment — all resolved within a half-day.
